With the participation of 32 teams from 14 Universities, the first ever Law Olympiad in the history of Bangladesh was successfully held at the East Delta University, Chittagong on 29th-30th August, 2017. After intense competition among the young legal minds, ‘Team Aquinas’ of the BRAC University emerged as the champion of the Olympiad whereas “Team Objections‘ from University of Chittagong became the Runners Up.
Organized by the Society For Critical Legal Studies (SCLS), the theme of the Olympiad was ‘Protect Human Rights, Promote Humanity’. Divided into 5 rounds of competitions, the teams contested in different formats of legal brainstorming and the winning teams from each round was awarded.
Justice Mahmudul Haque, Honorable judge of the High Court Division was present at the Olympiad as the the chief guest. Professor Muhammad Sekandar Khan, honorable Vice Chancellor of East Delta University and Mr Hossuain Al Ashkari, Assistant Public Prosecutor of Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court of Chittagong were also present as special guests.
The event was presided over by Mr. Nirmal Kumar Saha, Associate Professor of Department of Law, University of Chittagong who is also the Moderator of SCLS. Among others, Mr. M Jashim Ali Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, University of Chittagong, who is also the founding Moderator and Ambassador of SCLS, has facilitated some sessions.
In his speech as the Chief Guest, Justice Mahmudul Haque praised the innovative initiative and stated that, “SCLS is worthy of appreciation for Organizing Law Olympiad like Math Olympiad, Science Olympiad and so on. And this competition will make the law students of Bangladesh more enthusiastic to study law.”
Among the 32 participating teams, two teams from International Islamic University Chittagong, a team from BRAC University and a team from Chittagong University advanced to the final rounds. This groundbreaking program was attended by hundreds of law students, academicians and practitioners who vowed to strive for the protection of human rights.
