Society for Critical Legal Studies (SCLS) organized the M. Anwarul Azim Law Lecture 2017, which was held on 20th May, 2017 at Zilla Parishad Auditorium, Chittagong. The topic of the lecture was ‘Criticism of Apex Court Judgment vs. Contempt of Court, where Justice Md. Hasan Arif, an eminent sitting Judge of Bangladesh Supreme Court was the keynote speaker and chief guest of the seminar.

The resource person elucidated contempt of court from the perspective of British, Indian and Bangladeshi Legal system. He glossed on the nature, sediment and impending scenario of contempt of court. He assimilated that, Contempt of court is not to impede the drift of opinion against Judges rather it is employed as the device to espouse the dignity of the court. Power of ruling against any entity is devised to maintain ‘institutional majesty’ of the court as an undivided organ of any democratic state. In his lecture, Justice Md. Hasan Arif cited various renowned cases to illuminate the fact including the Arundhati Roy Case, Mahmudur Rahman Case and Swadesh Roy case.

The program was presided over by M. Jashim Ali Chowdhury, an Assistant Professor of the Department of Law, University of Chittagong and the moderator of SCLS. Barrister Hasan Azim, a distinguished lawyer of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh was present at the program as special guest. He admired SCLS for its potential exploits, flourishing both public university’s as well as private university’s law students during his speech. Other distinguished and well known figures namely Mr. Md Helal Chowdhury, Honorable District and Sessions Judge, Chittagong; Mr. Md Shahenoor, Honorable Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Chittagong, Professor Nirmal Kumar Saha, Department of Law, University of Chittagong and Advocate Ratan Roy, President, District Bar Association, Chittagong enlightened the seminar.

Approximately 125 students from different universities from Chittagong and Comilla participated in the program. The seminar was called off with the concluding speech and vote of thanks by the moderator of SCLS Mr. M. Jashim Ali Chowdhury.
