A learning session on Combating Gender Based Violence: Shielding Women through Legal Mechanism was held today at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) Auditorium at Dhaka. Organized by the Student Legal Aid Forum (SLAF), a number of enthusiastic law students, professionals, academics and activists participated in that session. The Learning session focused on gender based violence to celebrate the International Day for the Violence Against Women.
The session was presided over by Ms. Fatima Begum, President of SLAF. Mr. Malik Abdullah Al Amin, Senior District Judge and Director of the National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) was present as the Chief Guest. The key-note paper was presented by Ms. Shirin Sultana, Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka.
Initiated by Mr. K M Ashbarul Bari, General Secretary of SLAF, the speakers of the program discussed about different aspects of the effectiveness of legal protection mechanism for vulnerable women. Among the panel discussants, Ms. Ismet Jihan, Senior Assistant Judge and the District Legal Aid Officer of Gazipur discussed about the activities of NLASO and the alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The international aspects of protecting women suffering from gender based violence was highlighted by Ms. Violine Autheman, Senior Program Manager of National Center for State Courts (NCSC). This learning session was funded by the Justice for All Program of USAID.
The Student Legal Aid Forum started working officially from May 25 of 2015. Initiated and run by a group of enthusiast law students, they have conducted advocacy workshops in different universities of Bangladesh, and has organized national seminars to raise awareness and motivation among the Law students, who will be the key stakeholders in different sectors of Law and justice in the days to come. The first ever Legal Support app for android platforms was also launched by the platform to ensure more access from the mass.
As a measure to expand their operations, SLAF formally unveiled the Constitution and declared the newly constituted National Board along with the Chapter Management teams.
